Hello, my dear traveling and non-traveling friends! It is my great pleasure to introduce you to little-known, but extremely interesting places that deserve attention. Honestly, I would hardly have recognized them if I hadn't accidentally stumbled upon them.

Today I will tell you about the Wurmtal Nature Park, or as it is called – the Valley of the Worm . This name is not accidental – the valley is crossed by the Wurm River, whose name in translation means “worm”. In my opinion, the name is completely appropriate, because the river, with its modest length of just over 50 kilometers, winds through picturesque areas, creating a wonderful environment for rich biodiversity.

In addition to the beautiful winding river, Wurmtal offers many opportunities for nature lovers. The area is dotted with dense forests, green meadows and calm water areas, which create ideal conditions for walks, picnics and wildlife watching.

Here you can encounter a variety of bird species, including brightly colored woodpeckers, elegant herons, and even rare species that use the valley as a nesting site. In addition, the rich biodiversity of the area includes various mammals, such as deer, rabbits, and foxes, which sometimes surprise visitors with their presence.

One of the most interesting things for me is that the river passes through some small towns, where picturesque ponds are formed. You can ride a pedalo on them and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

The Wurm River flows through little-known towns like Würzelen and Geilenkirchen before flowing into the Ruhr River near the town of Heinsberg . If you decide to visit the latter, I can suggest a small detour from the route – head to Lago Laprello , an artificial lake with an interesting structure.

Lago Laprello is divided into two parts – the north and south lake . The south lake is intended for sports, recreation and pleasant moments in nature, and people can often be seen here riding water bikes. The north lake, on the other hand, is designed as a nature reserve , where many species of birds nest. Although access to it is not allowed, it can be observed from certain areas, offering a wonderful opportunity for wildlife lovers.

From Sofia or Varna by plane to Cologne – this is the best option for fast travel. The flight is about 2.5 hours , and from Cologne airport you have several transportation options.

Rent a car – The easiest option! From Cologne to Heinsberg is about 80 km , which takes approximately one hour . Along the way you can enjoy the typical German landscapes, and the freedom of personal transport allows you to divert your route to interesting places.

By train – If you prefer trains, the journey becomes a little more complicated, but it is still possible.

  1. From Cologne you can take a regional train to Geilenkirchen .

  2. From there – another train or bus to Heinsberg . - oh, it's a long way!

Therefore, renting a car in this case would be your most convenient option.
