Wassenberg has a unique combination of history, culture and natural beauty. And although it is not as famous, it still has a lot to offer. Though it's not as well-known as other destinations, it has so much to offer. My visit came about during an "Autumn Capture Journey"—a spontaneous discovery while driving through the Ruhr area. This experience made me wonder: why do we, as tourists, often rush to visit the big, famous cities while overlooking these small, hidden gems?
Don't get me wrong—I love the energy of cosmopolitan cities. But more and more, I find myself setting aside at least one day to explore the smaller towns nearby, those hidden treasures just waiting to be uncovered. It does take some planning, but it's always worth it!
Getting to Wassenberg
Wassenberg is just 96 km northwest of Cologne, and it’s easy to reach by car. If you don’t enjoy driving, there’s a convenient train and bus combination available. From Düsseldorf, it’s only 60 km, and you’ll find the same easy train and bus route. If you opt for public transport, expect about a 2-hour journey each way—but trust me, the destination is worth it!
Here are some interesting facts about the city.
A Walk Through History

Wassenberg is steeped in history, dating back to Roman times. Its impressive castle, perched high above the town, once served as a strategic fortress and is now a must-see for visitors.
The town is also part of the ancient pilgrimage route, the "Via Belgica", a Roman road that once connected Cologne to the Belgian coast. Today, it still attracts history lovers and curious travelers alike.
As you stroll through Wassenberg, you’ll be transported to the town’s medieval past. The well-preserved city gate and the remnants of the medieval city walls are fascinating glimpses into its rich heritage.
Nature at Its Best
My journey to Wassenberg took me through the stunning Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, which is right next door to the town. This protected area is a paradise for nature lovers, with its serene lakes, lush forests, and endless hiking and cycling trails. The natural beauty surrounding Wassenberg is simply breathtaking, especially in autumn.
Why Visit Wassenberg?
Wassenberg may not be as famous as Cologne or Düsseldorf, but its blend of history, culture, and nature makes it a true hidden gem. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or just someone looking for a peaceful escape, this town has something special to offer.
